Moving on after divorce: a survival guide

On Behalf of | May 26, 2020 | Divorce

Divorce may be the end of a marriage, but it can also be an opportunity. Many people focus on the “failure” of a marriage, and forget that a divorce is the chance to start fresh. It may certainly be a time of stress and emotional upheaval, but that doesn’t have to be the only way to see divorce.

If you’re considering getting a divorce here in Texas, you may wonder how you’re going to manage your life after signing the papers. The good news is that there are several ways for you to set yourself up for success after divorce. There are many strategies for how you handle your ex and how you handle yourself.

Dealing with your ex after divorce

For those who share children with their ex, it is imperative to determine how you want to handle parenting time, and hiring a professional to assist you may be the best way to do that. If you make a specific plan, it will be easier to adhere to and keep the focus on your children rather than your past relationship. For those that don’t have children with their ex, it may be best to end any relationship, including friendship, with your ex-spouse. This gives you the chance to fully heal.

Whether you have kids with your ex or not, practice letting go of any past or present hurts so that you don’t respond emotionally if you have to deal with him or her. It may also be tempting to compare your life to your ex’s, especially if he or she has a new relationship, but their new life together has no bearing on yours. Do your best to always take the high road when you deal with him or her, especially if you talk about your ex to your children.

Dealing with yourself after divorce

If at all possible, consider seeing a therapist during and after your divorce to deal with any lingering emotional issues. It might be a part of self-care, which is also vital at this time. Be sure that you are eating right and staying active to keep healthy mentally and physically. This is also a great time to go back to old hobbies you used to enjoy or even try something new that your ex didn’t want to do.

Before getting into a new relationship, it may be best to take time to consider exactly what you want in this area of your life. This will help you avoid making the same mistakes you might have made in your marriage. Your friends may be able to help you figure this part out. While you’re at it, be sure to let them know that you appreciate their support. Gratitude for others can help you feel better too.

Considering divorce? Talk to a professional

If you’re planning to divorce, you may want to discuss the matter with an experienced family law attorney. An attorney can help you view your divorce with less emotion and ensure that you receive fair consideration in your divorce settlement. This could be your first step on the path to a new future.
