Reasons to consider an open adoption

On Behalf of | Jul 24, 2020 | Adoption

For many parents, choosing to adopt a child can be one of the most difficult decisions to make. Adoption can also be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences in life. Adopting a child is a wonderful way to build a story of love and devotion for the future. These days, many social stigmas surrounding adoption have diminished and the state of Texas completes some of the highest numbers of adoptions in the United States each year. Of the many types of adoption, open adoption has become increasingly common.

Open adoption basically means that adoptive parents and biological parents have some knowledge about one another and establish lines of communication. Open adoptions usually include communication in the form of phone calls, emails, letters, pictures or in-person visits. In some cases, the birth parents may even help choose the adoptive parents. There are several benefits to an open adoption.

It can be emotionally and psychologically painful for a biological mother to place her child for adoption, so updates about the child can help the birth mother heal. Also, an open adoption can be very beneficial for adopted children. It will show them where they come from and help them to gain an understanding of their story from a young age. Adopted children who understand the circumstances surrounding their adoption often have a better sense of self and are able to accept their adoption much quicker.

In many open adoptions, the adoptive parents and birth parents will sign an agreement or contract detailing the type of communication and frequency expected from both parties. Open adoptions are not legally enforceable in the state of Texas, however. Open adoptions allow birth mothers and adoptive families to communicate and make positive choices that benefit each other as well as the children. Texas residents who have questions regarding any aspect of adoptioncould gain clarity and obtain guidance by consulting a knowledgeable and seasoned attorney.
