How can you divorce a narcissist?

On Behalf of | Feb 1, 2022 | Divorce

Getting a divorce in Texas is hard enough, but it can be more difficult if your spouse is a narcissist. It’s important to use certain tips and tools when you find yourself in such a situation.

Remember that they’ll try to appear as the victim

Narcissists use whatever they can to their own advantage. They often portray themselves as the victim. You should expect nothing different during a divorce. In court, they will try to paint you as the bad guy while they appear as a victim.

Avoid dating someone new until after the divorce

Your spouse won’t take it well if you start dating someone new while your divorce is ongoing. You should wait until after it’s final. In the meantime, focus on yourself and having healthy relationships with friends and family members.

Expect to be set up

A narcissistic spouse will try to set you up to fail. This is done so they can build themselves back up. They can use this against you during a divorce.

Get professional help

While divorcing a narcissist, you need all the professional help you can get. You may want to consult with a mental health professional who can coach you and help you as you divorce your narcissistic spouse.

Expect conflict

You should always expect conflict when divorcing a narcissist. They might even use your children as leverage against you if you share kids together. You will want to protect your children as much as possible during this time.

Don’t look to mediation

Divorce mediation is only appropriate when both spouses can work together to come to solutions that work for everyone. A narcissistic spouse is usually not interested in that. Expect a contentious traditional court divorce instead.
