Things to consider before you adopt

Adopting a child is one way to add to your family. Every year, millions of children worldwide are placed up for adoption. Prospective parents in San Antonio should know all the facts about adoption.

Remember the child’s loss

Adopting a child is a joyful time for new parents. However, it’s important to remember that many of the children available for adoption are there because they lost their families. While you should certainly make sure the child you’re adopting knows you’re excited to add them to your family, make sure to be sympathetic to their loss and trauma.

Talking to the child about adoption

If you plan to adopt an infant, he or she will have no memory of his or her birth parents. However, you will need to eventually discuss the fact that you chose adoption with your child. When it comes time to start discussing medical histories and other relevant genetic information, your child should know why you don’t have that information.

Are you comfortable with birth family contact?

According to studies, somewhere between 60% and 70% of adoptions in the US are open adoptions. That means that the biological parents will have some level of access to and contact with your child. If that’s not something you are comfortable with, you should pursue a closed adoption.

Do you have other children?

If you already have children, whether they’re biological or adopted, it’s important to consider them before you commit to adopting another child. The dynamic of the home will change, and you must consider their feelings.

While adoption is one of the most beautiful methods of adding to your family, you must spend some time considering all the details.
